The Beach Wedding
Possibly our most loved and asked for wedding type but then again who doesn't love a wedding on a white sandy beach with the Indian ocean stretching endlessly as the backdrop. Salty breezes, swaying Palm trees and rays of sun leaving that natural glow upon your nuptials that only a magical island can do. Here are some of our favourite Beach locations in Sri Lanka for weddings.
Bentota is a resort town on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast only about an hour's drive from Colombo. With plenty of hotels, boutique hotel and villas it has plenty of wedding venues and accommodation options for your guests. Bentota Beach stretches North, where it turns into a sandy strip known as Paradise Island, parallel to Bentota Lagoon. Coral-rich diving sites include the much loved Canoe Rock. On the opposite side you find Bentota River, the centuries-old Galapota Temple with it large Buddha statue which certainly is worth a visit . Southeast is Lunuganga, the estate and luscious gardens of the late world renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa. Northeast is his brother Bevis's Brief Garden, another tropical wonder of flora. You will never be lost for things to explore and enjoy in Bentota but it is equally the perfect location to simply enjoy the breeze on the beach, possibly with a cold beer after a delicious meal at one of its many restaurants.
Galle is the ancient colonial Dutch capital of Sri Lanka. Located on the South coast it is well known for its charming Galle Fort, the secured old city founded by Portuguese colonists in the early 16th century. Stone sea walls, expanded by the Dutch, encircle car-free streets with architecture defiantly reflecting Portuguese, Dutch and British rule. Notable buildings include the 18th-century Dutch Reformed Church and the Galle Lighthouse which stands on the fort’s southeast tip. Just outside the forte you find numerous charming villas and hotels which are ideal wedding locations. Given the amount of great accommodation across budgets that are close by this makes an ideal city for a beach wedding.
Negombo is a city on the west coast of Sri Lanka, north of the capital, Colombo. Near the waterfront, the remains of the 17th-century Dutch Fort. Negombo Lagoon, lined with fishermen’s huts, feeds into the Dutch-era Hamilton Canal. The canal leads south to Colombo. Neoclassical St. Mary’s Church, completed in the 1920s, features a ceiling decorated with vivid religious paintings that will make you wonder along with the beauty of Negombo. The palms and the view of the stilt fishing just calms one's soul.
Mirissa is a small town on the south coast of Sri Lanka, located in the Matara District of the Southern Province. It is approximately 150 kilometres south of Colombo. Again a location with plenty of venues and accomodation as well as plenty of bars and restaurant allowing you and your guests plenty of options either side of your wedding. For the days after the wedding as you're recovering from all the festivities...crack open a coconut, slip into a hammock and rock gently in the breeze, allowing the hours to slip calmly by.
Hikkaduwa is a seaside resort town in southwestern Sri Lanka. It’s known for its strong surf and beaches, including palm-dotted Hikkaduwa Beach, lined with beach front restaurants and bars. The shallow waters opposite Hikkaduwa Beach shelter the Hikkaduwa National Park, which is a coral sanctuary and home to marine turtles and exotic fish. Inland, Gangarama Maha Vihara is a Buddhist temple decorated with hand-painted murals. A fun filled place for activities and a a perfect spot for anyone who would love to see some sea creatures such as turtles, starfish, Jellyfish and more. Hilkkaduwa beach is well known for it’s crystal clear sea.
